If you’re looking for some new films to add to your collection, these three “hidden gems” could be perfect for you.

There are few things more comforting than curling up on the sofa and sticking on an excellent film, but if you’re someone who watches movies regularly, what do you do when you’ve seen all the blockbusters? You can spend hours scrolling endlessly on streaming services to try and find something, but knowing what’s good and what isn’t can be tricky.

So if you need a new obsession but have no idea where to look, one movie buff on TikTok might have just the thing. Trey Nesbit, a film reviewer on social media, shared three “underrated” films that he would recommend to anyone.

All three of the films he suggested are available to watch on Amazon’s Prime Video service, and they all have fewer than 200,000 recorded logs on the film-based social media platform, Letterboxed, which means they’re incredibly niche.

But none of them are indie film projects, and they all have star-studded casts.

1. Thirteen Lives

Trey’s first recommendation is a film called Thirteen Lives, which is a biographical survival film from 2022 directed by Ron Howard. The film is based on the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue, when twelve young footballers aged 11 to 16 and their 25-year-old assistant coach became trapped in a cave in Thailand after football practice.

Thirteen Lives stars Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton, and Trey believes the film would have made millions at the box office if it had been released in the early 2000s when these stories were more popular.

He said: “This is a crazy story, and somebody like Ron Howard is so good at covering true stories like this. If this movie came out, obviously this just happened a couple of years ago, but if a movie like this came out in like 2005, it would have made £300 million at the box office. But nobody saw this movie. It’s such an underrated gem.”

Thirteen Lives is included in the base subscription of Prime Video in the UK.

2. Martha Marcy May Marlene

Martha Marcy May Marlene is the “darkest” film on Trey’s list. It was released in 2011 and is a psychological thriller drama that stars Elizabeth Olsen, John Hawkes, Sarah Paulson, and Hugh Dancy.

It follows the story of a young woman named Martha (Olsen) who is suffering from PTSD after fleeing a violent and sexually abusive cult commune in the Catskill Mountains in North America.

Trey said: “This is a darker movie, for sure, but [an] incredible performance by Elizabeth Olsen. This really put her on the map.

“This [film] follows her as she is just leaving a cult, and she goes to live with her sister, Sarah Paulson, to try and deal with some of the after effects of being in that cult. This just really put Elizabeth Olsen on the map as just a masterclass in dominating a character and fully embodying everything that the character is going through.”

Martha Marcy May Marlene is available on Prime Video in the UK but is not included in the base subscription and costs £3.49 to rent or £4.99 to buy.

3. The Lost City of Z

The final film Trey would recommend is The Lost City of Z, a 2016 biographical adventure drama that is based on the 2009 book of the same name by David Grann. The movie has an incredibly star-studded cast that includes Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller, and even Tom Holland.

The Lost City of Z tells the story of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Hunnam), who was sent to Brazil and made several attempts to find a supposed ancient lost city in the Amazon.

Trey said of the film: “How more people haven’t seen this is crazy to me. This follows Charlie Hunnam – he’s an explorer and obviously trying to find the lost city of Z. It’s just an incredible movie.”

The Lost City of Z is free on Prime Video if you have a Studiocanal Presents subscription, or you can access their 30-day free trial. Otherwise, you can rent it for £3.49 or buy it for £5.99.
