TV Licence fine warning for Tyson Fury fight Netflix streaming viewers | Boxing | Sport
Tyson Fury returns to the boxing ring against Arslanbek Makhmudov at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend. The fight will be streamed live on Netflix, but UK viewers need another subscription to legally watch it on Saturday evening.
According to the official TV licensing website, to watch a live event on any streaming service such as YouTube, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, a TV license is required. Specifically on the latter, it warns: “If you are watching a TV programme that is being broadcast live on Netflix, you need to be covered by a TV Licence”.
A basic £5.99 monthly Netflix subscription covers live events, but for those wanting to stream the Fury fight who do not have a TV license, it will cost £180 for the year or £15 on a monthly direct debit. It is specifically noted that any viewer caught streaming the action on Netflix without a license could face a fine of up to £1,000.
The Gypsy King’s upcoming fight makes it two consecutive weekends of huge boxing events after Deontay Wilder beat Derek Chisora, with both men having storied histories with Fury. Anthony Joshua was also in the crowd, with it being his first public appearance since being involved in a car crash in Nigeria that tragically killed his two close friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
Back in February, Fury said: “The biggest turning point in this comeback for me was a tragedy that happened with Anthony Joshua. I was on holiday with my family in Thailand for Christmas, then I hear all that bad news that’s gone on, and I thought life is very, very short and very precious and very fragile and anything can happen at any given moment.
“You should never put things off until tomorrow or next year or next week because tomorrow is never promised to nobody. I made my mind up there and then that I’m going to come back to boxing because it’s something that I love and I’m passionate about and I’ve always been in love with, and there is no tomorrow to put it off too, so that’s why I’m back today for this big fight.”
