A major road has been forced to shut in both directions following a tunnel fire, causing traffic chaos.

The A55, in Wales, is closed due to a vehicle fire in the Conwy Tunnel. Smoke can be seen billowing from the tunnel.

Fire crews are now on the scene and major queues are building.

A Traffic Wales statement said: “Warning. Vehicle fire A55 Conwy Tunnel – Closed in both directions. Emergency services are on scene. Please avoid the area.”

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service has declared a “major incident” and urged residents living nearby to close their doors and windows.
