With the half term holidays on the way, many families are looking for affordable destinations away where they can soak up some much-needed sun.

However, with tourists visiting the best-known hotspots typically facing higher costs for accommodation and activities, it could pay to know where the locals head for their own getaways.

According to Hand Luggage Only, one of the best places to visit in Spain that many tourists do not know about is Cadaqués in Girona.

The coastal town is incredibly picturesque, with its tightly packed cream and terracotta-coloured buildings and rocky coastline.

Perhaps its outstanding beauty is what drew Salvador Dali to the town, with tourists still able to visit his home on the coast, which features a variety of unique sculptures and pieces of his work.

Another location that few outside of Spain are aware of is Morella, a walled city situated in Castellón on the east coast.

Another historic area, Morella can trace its history back to prehistoric times, featuring cave paintings believed to have been made up to 7,400 years ago.

Travellers who enjoy going on walks in the countryside will also appreciate the nearby route going through the Maestrazgo mountains.

For tourists who want to see a village built inside a mountain however, Hand Luggage Only recommended paying a visit to Setenil de las Bodegas in Cádiz in southern Spain.

With a population of under 2,800, part of the small village was constructed into the rocky surface of a gorge, making for some very unusual travel snaps.

The area is well known for producing chorizo and olive oil, however visitors that want the hustle and bustle of a large city can still take a half-hour drive to Ronda.

Finally, the company suggested that tourists should do what the Royal Family used to and pay a visit to Carratraca in Málaga.

Legend has it that various monarchs from Europe would come to Carratraca for its hot sulphur springs that offer healing properties.

Whilst visitors can still take a dip and get some rest and relaxation, the town also offers a wide range of museums showcasing its colourful history and the opportunity to explore its caves.
