Africa’s most overcrowded country is a holiday hotspot | Travel News | Travel
This pretty island nation is a popular tourist destination and it’s not surprising that it’s one of the most overcrowded places in Africa.
Mauritius is rightly famed for its sapphire waters, powder-white beaches and luxury resorts, says Lonely Planet.
The country is one of Africa’s most famous natural beauty spots with tourists flocking to see its shores in their masses.
Yet most pictures of Mauritius show tourist-free empty beaches – but this isn’t always what you’ll find when you get there, as it actually has by far and away the highest population density of any African nation.
Statista reports it has 641 inhabitants per square kilometer, compared to just 279 people per square kilometer in the UK, and 582 people per square kilomter in Africa’s second most crowded country, Rwanda.
If you plan to visit, you’ll be able to have a varied experience from hiking in forests to snorkelling in its beautiful clear oceans.
One of the most visited places is Le Morne Beach which is known for its postcard-perfect scenery.
A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “The most beautiful beach I have ever been to in Mauritius! Crystal clear water, super quiet, not overcrowded. There are no local buses going to this beach and no ice cream trucks. Great restaurant at the beach ‘Emba Filao’, with reasonably priced meals.”
Another penned: “This beach is beautiful with azure blue waters and soft white sand. A fabulous restaurant too. Also toilets, plenty of shade and parking. Ideal for a lovely afternoon on the beach.”
Make sure to keep an eye out for whales and dolphins as there;s a good chance you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of some while in Mauritius.
If you’re hoping to explore the forest areas Mauritius has to offer, you can visit Black River Gorges National Park.
This natural reserve is filled with hiking trails to observe the indigenous forests and variety of wildlife.
A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “This place must offer some of the best views of the south of Mauritius. Just a short walk from the parking area and you are blessed with truly stunning views over the national park. Plenty of monkeys around as well to keep you entertained.”
