Air India flight in mid-air U-turn over ‘suspected glitch’ days after deadly disaster | World | News

An Air India flight bound for Delhi from Hong Kong was forced to turn back after the pilot reported a suspected glitch, it was reported. A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner departed on Monday morning when the issue was swiftly detected mid-flight. The pilot of flight AI315 made the decision to return to Hong Kong, in line with standard safety protocols.

Air India is yet to release a statement or give further updates on the issue, or the flight being rescheduled. However, the aircraft did land safely back to the city it initially flew from, with no reports of injuries. Shortly after landing, India Today reports that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft.

This comes after another Air India flight travelling from Delhi to Vadodara was also forced to return on Sunday evening. This was due to a suspected landing gear issue, the Times of India reports. The Airbus A321 departed at 6:51pm when the pilot noticed the landing gear did not retract as it was meant to.

The crew then returned for a precautionary landing, arriving safely.

Last week, an Air India disaster which saw a Boeing 787 – the same aircraft model as the plane which u-turned today – plummet to the ground, killing at least 270 people. Less than a minute after taking off from Ahmedabad airport in northwestern India, the London-bound plane crashed and exploded into a fireball. Of the 242 people onboard, 241 died.

Sole survivor Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, was on the plane seated in 11A, the Hindustan Times reports. He was travelling back to London with his brother, who was also on the flight.

He explained that he managed to escape the disaster after his side of the plane fell onto the ground floor of a building where he forced his way out of the plane through a broken door. Viswash was then immediately assisted by locals and taken to a hospital.
