Alexander Isak comments backfire as Liverpool star has egg on his face | Football | Sport
Alexander Isak’s comments following his departure from Newcastle may well be haunting him now as the striker has set an unwelcome Premier League milestone. The Sweden international departed St James’ Park during the summer to join the reigning league champions Liverpool in a transfer valued at approximately £130million.
Isak had voiced his intention to leave Newcastle throughout the summer transfer window, which ultimately resulted in the striker securing his desired move to Anfield. Prior to his departure, Isak was absent from all pre-season fixtures for the Magpies and trained separately from his team-mates while the transfer saga continued.
Since his Newcastle exit, Isak has managed just one goal for Liverpool, against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, and remains without a league goal.
Saturday witnessed Isak and Liverpool suffer yet another setback as the Merseyside club fell to a 3-0 home defeat against Nottingham Forest.
Isak began the match before being taken off during the second half, with the loss also seeing Isak establish an unwanted league milestone.
According to Opta, Isak has now made history as the first player in Premier League records to suffer defeat in all four of his first four starts for Liverpool.
This statistic has brought Isak’s post-signing remarks back to bite him, with the striker having outlined his ambitions to “create history” after his Newcastle departure.
“It’s a mixture of what the club is building, but what they’re building on top of what the club already is. The history of the club,” Isak said in September.
“Me getting the chance to be a part of this, I want to create history. I want to win trophies.
“That’s ultimately the biggest motivation for me and I feel like this is the perfect place for me to grow even further and to take my game to the next level and help the team as well.
“I feel like this is the next step for me in my career. I’m super-happy that I’ve been given this chance and I’m very motivated to do something well with it.”
