All we know about the cause of Ricky Hatton’s death ahead of new inquest

Unexpected death: Former two-division world boxing champion Ricky Hatton was discovered dead at his Hyde residence in Greater Manchester on Sunday, September 14, 2025. His death, aged 46, shocked the sporting world and prompted a massive wave of tributes from fans and fellow sportspeople alike.

Discovery by close friend: Hatton was found unresponsive by his long-time manager and friend, Paul Speak, who had gone to the house to pick him up. The pair were supposed to head to Manchester Airport for a trip to Dubai, where Hatton was scheduled to promote a future exhibition bout.

Lead up to death: The court heard that Hatton’s family last saw him on September 12, at which time he seemed well and in high spirits. Concerns grew when he missed a scheduled event on the Saturday, eventually leading to the welfare check being made the following morning.

Police findings: Greater Manchester Police arrived at the scene around 6.45am after being alerted by Mr. Speak. After an initial investigation at the home, officials said there was no evidence of foul play or third-party involvement.

Provisional cause of death: During the opening of the inquest in October, the senior coroner for Manchester South, Alison Mutch, revealed a provisional cause of death. The court was told that the legendary boxer is believed to have died by hanging.

Inquest details: The initial hearing held on October 16 at Stockport Coroner’s Court lasted only ten minutes and served as a formal opening of the investigation. Police coroner’s officer Alison Catlow provided a short chronology of Hatton’s final days before the case was adjourned.

Manchester memorial: A funeral service for Hatton was held on October 10 at Manchester Cathedral, preceded by a public procession that drew thousands of mourners to the streets. The funeral cortege included his famous ‘Trotters’ van and paused at the Etihad Stadium as a final tribute to his love for Manchester City.

Objectives of the March hearing: A full and comprehensive inquest is set for March 20, 2026, to review all available evidence. This aims to establish a definitive conclusion with regards to the circumstances of his passing.
