Amazon has my favourite exercise headphones at their cheapest price ever

When it comes to buying earbuds for exercise and active use, there are an overwhelming number of different options. While many offer in-ear designs, the downside for runners, gym goers and everyone in between is that these earbuds block out external sounds. That’s great for chilling at home or on a plane with your tunes, but when exercising you probably want to be aware of your surroundings.

That’s where open-ear earbuds and headphones come in. This category has different designs that often sit on or around, but not in, your ears, letting you enjoy music, podcasts and audiobooks but with an open ear canal so you can still hear the instructor at the front of class, cars as you navigate traffic, or your coffee order at the end of your run.

I’ve tested several open-ear headphones, and a pair I’ve been very impressed with are currently on sale over at Amazon. The Shokz OpenFit Air are wireless headphones with an over-ear hook design that keeps them securely in place whatever the activity, and they’re just £64 right now, down from £94.

Amazon price tracker site Camelcamelcamel shows this is the cheapest price the buds have ever been sold for.

The earphone part sits over the opening of your ear, piping audio down your ear canal but not blocking it totally. This means the OpenFit Air is very comfortable. I could easily wear them all day at my desk to work, and I have also used them when training for a half marathon.

I also wore the OpenFit Air for said half marathon, and even with loud London crowds en route, the headphones were loud enough for me to still enjoy my pumped up playlist. I prefer them to the bone conduction headband style headphones that Shokz is also famous for.

Due to the open-ear design, the audio quality on the OpenFit Air is not as good as comparable in-ear earbuds. That’s the pay off here, and at high volumes you do lose some detail. You get EQ controls and personalised sound options in the Shokz app which can help a little. But most of the time, I appreciated the fact I could hear what was going on around me, plus the ear fatigue associated with in-ear buds irritating ear canals is non-existent here.

Available for £64 in black, white or pink, the OpenFit Air are so-named because they are incredibly light. Each piece is just 8.7g, so you barely feel them even though they’re hooked on. You also get IP54 water resistance, which is enough to withstand sweat or a rain shower.

The buds also have mics so you can easily take phone calls or video calls, with six hours of battery life on a full charge. The charging case then offers you 28 hours overall when it is charged, so you can keep going for days of use before you need to find a USB-C cable.

Amazon says this is a “limited time deal”, so it’s not clear when it will end. But I do know that the Shokz OpenFit Air are an excellent deal at this price.
