Ancient castle on rocky river used in huge TV show is must-visit hidden gem | Europe | Travel
Cahir Castle is an imposing example of medieval construction on the River Suir, dating back to the 13th century. Its exceptional state of preservation creates the sensation of stepping onto a period drama set.
Indeed, thanks to an engaging audio-visual presentation, guests can now gain deeper insight into the fortress’s history. The location has featured in numerous historical productions including Excalibur and The Tudors – starring Henry Cavill.
Once the home of the prominent Butler dynasty, Heritage Ireland notes that this powerful Anglo-Norman family occupied the site for nearly 600 years following its transfer to James Butler, the 3rd Earl of Ormond, in 1375.
The fortress was considered unconquerable, designed to safeguard the Butler family. Yet this reputation crumbled in 1599 when the Earl of Essex launched an intensive military campaign against their stronghold, reports the Irish Mirror.
Essex pounded Cahir’s defences with substantial firepower during its initial deployment. The castle yielded – though not for the final occasion.
Throughout the Irish Confederate Wars, it endured two additional sieges.
Nevertheless, upon its original construction, it represented the pinnacle of protective innovation.
During its creation, Cahir Castle embodied the most advanced principles of defensive fortress architecture – with numerous features remaining intact and visible for modern visitors to explore.
One Trip Advisor user awarded the experience a full five stars, saying: “Castle Cahir is indeed impressive – one of the best preserved medieval castles in Ireland I have ever visited.
“Its location on a rocky islet in the middle of the Shur River makes it feel like it’s in the pages of a history book. Massive stone walls, towers and river views are already worth the trip.
“The tour is very informative and helps to imagine how it was lived centuries ago – from battles to everyday life. Even without a guide, the information stands are clear and well designed.”
Another visitor chimed in with their praise, stating: “By far the best example of a castle that I have seen yet. Beautifully restored ceilings using the correct methods, everything was spot on.”
A grand castle nestled on the banks of the River Suir in the heart of town, its origins can be traced back to around 1142, with additions made over the ensuing decades.
Having been the site of numerous historical battles, the castle offers an abundance of fascinating information about its storied past.
