Angry Jack Draper screams at himself during furious Monte-Carlo Masters moment | Tennis | Sport
Jack Draper let out a bellowing scream midway through his Monte-Carlo Masters clash against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Thursday morning. The Brit had defeated Marcos Giron en route to the third round before being paired against world No.42 Davidovich Fokina.
Draper looked a yard off the pace during a grueling first set, which Davidovich Fokina went on to win 3-6 against the serve. And it was during the eighth game of the match that Draper lost his cool, shouting “wake up” to himself after being broken to zero.
The impromptu pep talk did little to improve his fortunes, with Draper not only losing the point but also missing out on the set itself. Reacting to the move, Naomi Cavaday, who was on commentary duty, said during the Sky Sports coverage: “Jack Draper is seething.”
Ryan Harrison, on co-commentary, said: “Telling himself to wake up, he’s in a bit of a lull at the moment, he’s trying to ignite a bit of fire.” And Cavaday later added: “He is furious, second time he’s been broken in the match, but this time it could be more costly.”
Draper continued to be animated throughout the first set, with Harrison reacting: “Sometimes people don’t like to see the emotion. I think he [Draper] is doing it in a way that is allowing himself to stay switched on and he’s just trying to get himself stuck into the match.”
He managed to channel that passion to win three games in a row in the second set, coming from 3-1 down against the Spaniard to lead 4-3. The pair shared the next five points between them, two going the way of Draper and the other three to Davidovich Fokina, meaning the second had to be decided by a tiebreaker. Draper – just about – kept his nerve to force a third.
Draper had been hoping to make a statement during the first major clay court tournament of the year, having previously stated the surface wasn’t his “first choice”. The Giron demolition inspired confidence heading into Thursday’s match, given he’d beaten the American in blistering fashion.
