Apple just made it easier to ditch your iPhone for an Android phone

If you have an iPhone and want to move to an Android phone when you next upgrade device, Apple is making it easier for you to do so. Given that there are only two smartphone platform choices these days – iOS or Android – it is still a massive headache when it comes to changing from one to the other.

Systems don’t talk to each other, things get transferred out of whack, and data can get left behind.

Apple and Google have both improved their transfer tools in recent years, but the folks at MacRumors have found an update to the next version of iOS that aims to make the transition easier.

Spotted in the beta version of iOS 26.3, what will be the next major update for iPhones that is currently in preview for beta testers, Apple has updated its Transfer to Android tool. This will surely have been done through gritted teeth, since I imagine no one internally at Apple could understand why someone would want to move to Android.

“The new transfer tool allows an ‌iPhone‌ user to place their device next to an Android device to initiate a transfer process,” according to MacRumors. “With the two smartphones connected, users can opt to move over photos, messages, notes, apps, passwords, phone number, and more. Data transfers occur with no need to download and use a separate app, making the process simpler.

“Health data, devices paired with Bluetooth, and protected items like locked notes are not transferred over to the new device.”

So there will still be some things Apple won’t let you take from your iPhone over the fence. To be fair, that’s probably a good thing and testament to Apple’s famously robust privacy rules for user data.

To do the transfer, you’ll need to be connected to Wi-Fi with Bluetooth enabled. I also presume the Android phone needs to be set up as new for this process, as is currently the case if you want to move your data from iPhone to Android, or vice versa.

Google has a similar feature built into Android for moving to iPhone. There is speculation that Apple and Google have introduced better transfer tools in order to comply with the Digital Markets Act in the European Union, but the new tool in iOS 26.3 is confirmed to be worldwide.

So, no matter where you live, if you have been wanting to jump ship from iPhone to Android, it’s about to get easier. iOS 26.3 will likely be pushed out to all modern iPhones in the next couple of months. iOS 26.2 was released earlier this week.
