Apple mocked over ‘impossibly cringe’ skit after iPhone 15 reveal

Apple has been brutally mocked for sharing an “impossibly cringe” skit following the unveiling of the iPhone 15, which has been panned by many of its loyal fans.

The tech giant interrupted its massive annual iPhone launch event on Tuesday to reveal a five-minute-long drama featuring CEO Tim Cook.

It shows ‘Mother Nature’, a character played by Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer, berating Apple over its carbon footprint, only to be told time and again about efforts made to reduce their emissions.

At one point, Mother Nature is staring out of the window onto Apple‘s HQ before Cook stands up from the table and says: “We’ve innovated and retold almost every part of our process to reduce our impact on the planet, but there is still a lot more work to do.

A woman at the boardroom table then reveals three new Apple Watches and says: “It’s Apple’s very first carbon-neutral product.

The skit ends with Cook promising a rather skeptical-looking Mother Nature that “by 2030, all Apple devices will have a net zero climate impact”.

But thousands of people have taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to tear apart the commercial, with start-up founder and software engineer Laura Wendel writing: “We’re reaching levels of corporate cringe previously considered to be impossible.”

One X user took to the platform to write: “This ‘Mother Nature’ skit was the cringiest thing I’ve seen in a while. Clearly, Apple is hit by the #WritersStrike as well.”

Another commented: “This was embarrassing to watch. Imagine, this is a company worth trillions. I’d fire everyone in marketing.”

A third person said: “They think it’s funny if they make it obvious but it remains cringe.”

Another viewer, referring to Apple’s late co-founder, chairman, and CEO who died in October 2011, said: “Imagine Steve Jobs was alive and saw this video.”

The commercial comes with Apple’s highly-anticipated iPhone 15 device receiving a seemingly disappointing reception from its legion of loyal fans.

The high-end smartphone has the same 6.1-inch display and video capacity as the previous model, as well as almost identical battery life.

The big difference that has got fans talking is the iPhone 15 will now feature a new, widely anticipated USB-C charging port.

Apple has already started selling a USB-C adapter on its website for $29, which will be necessary for new iPhone 15 users to connect their Lightning charging cables for current iPhones to their new one.

But many fans have been left disappointed, with one writing on X: “iPhone 15 just looks like the iPhone 14. Apple’s innovation died with Steve Jobs.”

Another wrote: “I’m a diehard Apple fan and iPhone 15 is so bland. I’m skipping and waiting to see iPhone 16.”

Several others made reference to the new USB-C charging port on the iPhone 15, with one writing: “So Apple ditched the iPhone charger and joined the club.”

Another said: “I’ve had my iPhone 14 Pro max less than a year and the new iPhone 15 is out?

“I’m really about to get a new phone for no reason. I remember they made fun of my C-Type charger, now look at them they have come to join our android charging system.”

A third person said: “Might finally upgrade my iPhone 8. It’s working very fine for me but I’d do anything to finally stop using that dogs**t Lightning cable, worst charger ever invented.”
