Arsenal ‘ready to sell two wonderkids, Gabriel Martinelli and others’ in brutal cull | Football | Sport
Arsenal are reportedly prepared to sell wonderkid duo Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly, among others, as part of a brutal cull during the summer transfer window. The Gunners are on the verge of a first Premier League title in 22 years, and already have one foot in the Champions League semi-finals.
Mikel Arteta has guided Arsenal to the brink of success, but regardless of how the season ends for the north Londoners, a big off-season is expected at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal are said to be willing to let Nwaneri – who is currently on loan at Marseille – and Lewis-Skelly leave, should a suitable offer arrive for either player.
That’s according to the BBC, who report that last year’s outlay of £250million means Arsenal could be forced to sell this summer so they meet the Premier League’s new squad cost ratio rules. That explains the openness to letting two very talented academy products leave, given they’d go down as pure profit on the balance sheet.
The pair are tied down to long-term contracts, and Arsenal would only sanction a sale if the finances worked in their favour, with the outlet suggesting a combined fee of £100m is what they’re looking for. Nwaneri is being courted by Borussia Dortmund, who have a good track record of developing young English talents.
But the duo aren’t the only players on Arsenal’s cull list, with Gabriel Jesus, Ben White and, perhaps surprisingly, Gabriel Martinelli, also among those who could be let go. Martinelli has netted just one Premier League goal this season, with suggestions that Arsenal could look to move him on and strengthen in the left-wing position.
As far as incomings go, a trio of Newcastle players are said to be on the club’s radar. Chief among them is Sandro Tonali, who emerged as a late target for Arsenal at the end of the January transfer window, with that interest said to be carrying over to the summer.
Tino Livramento is being eyed up by several Premier League sides, including Arsenal, with the right-back having shone at Newcastle. Meanwhile, Martinelli’s replacement could come in the shape of Anthony Gordon, who was looked at by Arsenal before his move to Newcastle in 2024.
Piero Hincapie’s loan move from Bayer Leverkusen is expected to be made permanent as part of a deal that will cost Arsenal £45m. Whereas Julian Alvarez has been linked with the Emirates Stadium outfit for some time, but it would likely require either Viktor Gyokeres or Kai Havertz to leave first.
