Avoid crowds in Italy by following travel consultant’s simple rule | Travel News | Travel

A travel consultant has revealed the best time to visit Italy if you have flexibility with your dates and are not bound by things like school holidays.

Jenna, who shares her insights on TikTok under the handle @italy.with.jenna, suggested that, while any time is a good time to visit Italy, there are certain periods when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are fewer.

Her favourite time to visit is from mid-September to early November, particularly in October. She also enjoys Italy well into November, although she acknowledged that the weather might be too cool for some holidaymakers.

Another ideal window, according to Jenna, is from early to mid-March until mid-May, when temperatures are agreeable. While there’s a slight risk of rain during these periods, most attractions remain open.

However, she warned that popular tourist destinations like the Amalfi Coast shut down from the end of October through early April. In contrast, cities like Rome, Florence and Venice stay open for the majority of the year.

Jenna also shared her least favourite times to visit Italy, which are mid-June to early September due to the heat and crowds.

She expressed her disdain for the Italian summer, particularly July and August, with a strong preference against the latter: “I hate being in Italy in the summer, July and August, I think [are the worst months to go] August definitely being one of the worst months”.

Jenna also pointed out that Italians often take their extended holidays during these times, leading to many places being “shut down”.

Her guidance was aimed at those planning “general travel in Italy,” suggesting that “these are really nice ranges for people”.

In response to her advice, one person commented: “Winter, I spent the best time in Italy, going to several different cities. No tourists! You should’ve seen Piazza San Marco , not a soul in sight. It was heaven.”

Another shared their imminent travel plans, adding: “I’m flying out tomorrow. Unfortunately, with my sister being bound to school holidays, this was about the only time. Hopefully won’t be a problem next year though.”

Echoing Jenna’s sentiment, another traveller recounted their experience: “I went during March this year, and it was PERFECT. So much less busy,” they enthused.

Ultimately, the decision on when to visit Italy is a personal one, influenced by individual preferences for weather and tolerance for tourist crowds.
