BBC Question Time: Iain Dale reveals two-word verdict by taxi driver over Keir Starmer | Politics | News

Iain Dale revealed the damning verdict of Sir Keir Starmer by a taxi driver who took him to BBC Question Time.

The broadcaster said he asked the cabbie for his thoughts on the main local issues en route to the panel show in Aberdeen.

Mr Dale said the taxi driver said North Sea oil and gas and that if the Labour leader wins the general election “we’re finished”.

The moment came as the show, where Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar and SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn were also panellists, discussed whether there is a future for North Sea oil.

Mr Dale said: “On the way to this venue this evening I came by taxi from Aberdeen Airport and I always think it’s a good idea to ask the taxi drivers what they think of the main local issues.

“And without a hesitation he said oil and gas because if Keir Starmer gets in we’re finished.

“That was his view, not my view, that was his view.”

Turning to Mr Sarwar, he went on: “I think that’s something if you want to get Stephen out of his seat in Aberdeen you’re going to have to address.”

Earlier in the show, the Scottish Labour leader had insisted there is a future for North Sea oil as he defended his party’s green plans.

Labour has pledged to ban new oil and gas licences if it takes power.

Mr Sarwar said: “The point here is that we have a genuine plan to make the transition. Let me be really clear there’s no turning off the tap, no cliff edge, oil and gas will play a significant role for decades to come.

“One of the really important reasons is if we are to meet our transition then we need those involved in the oil and gas sector to be partners and helping us make those strategic investments so we can maximise the opportunities of the green revolution.”
