BBC strike deal as top-flight football heading to free-to-air TV | Football | Sport

The BBC has secured a deal to broadcast eight Serie A fixtures between now and the end of the season, bringing top-flight Italian football to free-to-air television for British viewers. BBC Sport has confirmed the package, which begins today (Sunday), will allow supporters to follow the progress of seven Scotland internationals plying their trade in Italy ahead of this summer’s World Cup, including former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

The arrangement, which sees matches sub-licensed from DAZN by BBC Alba, will feature reigning Italian champions Napoli, who count McTominay and Billy Gilmour among their squad. Sunday’s opening fixture at 5pm will showcase Torino versus Bologna. Scotland striker Che Adams represents the former, whilst midfielder Lewis Ferguson is a crucial figure for Bologna. Additional fixtures will be revealed at a later date.

The other Scottish players set to feature alongside Adams, McTominay and Gilmour include Lennon Miller, Josh Doig and Kieron Bowie, who made the switch to Hellas Verona during the January transfer window.

Margaret Cameron, Alba’s director of content, commented on the deal: “This is a great opportunity for fans in Scotland to see these games free-to-air and enjoy watching the fantastic Scottish talent in Serie A in the run up to the World Cup.”

Scotland will be gracing the World Cup stage for the first time in 28 years this summer, thanks to Steve Clarke’s squad securing their spot.

They are set to compete against Brazil, Morocco and Haiti in Group C, with their inaugural match against Haiti scheduled for June 14 in Boston.

In response to the draw, Clarke expressed his excitement, stating: “Bring it on. The draw’s fantastic. One of the big things in my head was [getting] no European teams.

“So we’re playing three top sides from three different continents of the world and that’s what the World Cup’s all about.”
