BBC Winter Olympics commentator furious as viewers miss start of medal | Other | Sport
BBC commentator John Hunt fumed at the broadcaster’s camerawork as viewers missed the start of Matt Weston’s gold medal mixed team skeleton run. The Team GB athlete, alongside Tabitha Stoeker, beat the two German teams to a second British gold of the day – but those hoping to watch history being made were left disappointed.
As Weston waited to go down the slope, the camera panned away from him, instead looking at the official behind him giving him the green light. The images lifted up from Weston, on the floor, instead gave a close-up to the person shouting at him to start, as viewers missed the beginning of an iconic sporting moment.
Hunt was among the many to slam the camerawork, saying: “Oh what are they doing, what are they playing at, that’s terrible!”
He then offered an apology as he tried to compose himself for the rest of the run, adding: “That’s a great start, sorry about the pictures… but Matt’s on his way.”

Weston, who stormed to gold on Friday to seal Team GB’s first medal at the Games, became the first Briton to win two gold medals at a winter Olympics.
Stoecker had initially ran 1:00.77, 0.30 seconds off the pace of the Germans, with the Brits the last to run.
But Weston hit a stunning 58.59secs run to clinch his second win of the Games, sealing a Super Sunday after Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale won snowboard cross mixed team gold earlier.
However, the only disappointment is that the entirety of his run cannot be watched back as the live camera used by the BBC decided to cut away from the athlete at such a pivotal time.
But the 28-year-old could not contain his delight at the win, telling the broadcaster: “Luckily I felt like I kind of knew what I needed to do. Yesterday – not yesterday, the day before, it’s all a bit of a whirlwind, when I had the individual event I kind of took a load of confidence from that and I just had to almost in my head be boring and get the job done. We’ve done it again!”
Stoecker, who choked back tears in their joint interview, added: “Thanks [Matt]. I can’t believe it. It’s a team effort and when Matt came down and we were in the green, I was just in shock.”
The result moved Great Britain up to 12th in the medal time, with all three medals being gold wins in the span of three days.
