Thailand’s beaches are some of the world’s best and many British tourists travel to the beautiful country each year.

However, some of the country’s most popular hotspots have been ruined by overtourism according to one travel expert.

Nick Kembel, a travel blogger, told Express.co.uk that Phuket has become a “victim of its own popularity”.

He said: “In my opinion, Phuket is the perfect example of a place that’s become a victim of its own popularity.

“I believe in Phuket, the problem is most acute in Patong Beach, where jet skis and motorbikes crowd the waters while touts aggressively sell tattoos, suits and souvenirs on the beach. The once-quaint Old Town area is now bursting with tour groups.”

Phuket is Thailand’s leading holiday destination and is home to some of the country’s most famous beaches.

Nick said: “Phuket’s sprawling size means it’s still possible to find isolated beaches on the northwest and southwest coasts.

“Choosing a less crowded beach like Kata Noi, staying outside of Patong and visiting attractions early in the morning or late at night can provide some respite.”

Nick also recommended avoiding Pattaya, another of Thailand’s top coastal holiday destinations.

The travel expert told Express.co.uk: “Pattaya gained fame as a seedy destination for foreign men seeking adult entertainment.

“While it has tried to clean up its image, Walking Street and neighbouring Beach Road remain choked with go-go bars, massage parlours and raucous crowds.”

While Pattaya might be too busy for some, Nick said tourists will have a quieter experience at Jomtien Beach or taking a ferry to another island like Koh Lan.

It’s not just Thailand that’s struggling with overcrowding, several European destinations have introduced measures to control numbers.

France has even launched a campaign to encourage tourists to visit some of its lesser-known destinations.
