Beautiful village steeped in history is one of the UK’s best hidden gems | Travel News | Travel

Numerous “hidden gems” scattered across the country fuel the charm of UK staycations, beckoning travellers with their allure.

One is Hathersage in Derbyshire, which emerged as one of the most picturesque villages in the country, according to the HomeToGo 2021 UK Hidden Gem Index.

The historical pocket of Derbyshire stood out amongst other villages found in national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty. It was named a top hidden gem based on a blend of factors like location, climate, outdoor pursuits, the availability of traditional pubs and pricing – making for idyllic holiday prospects.

Hathersage’s true appeal lies beyond its scenic placement in the Hope Valley at the heart of the Peak District, famous for its enchanting and rugged landscapes.

Perfect for nature enthusiasts and foodies alike, it’s an idyllic spot for avid hikers, with renowned trails like Mam Tor and Bamford Edge nearby, yet it also caters to those who love the gastronomy scene.

The Visit Peak District and Derbyshire website outlines: “With rich historical, industrial, and literary associations, the picturesque village of Hathersage in the Hope Valley is brimming with character and has a great selection of shops, pubs, restaurants, and places to stay.”

According to Google Reviews, the top-rated restaurants in the area are The Derwentwater Arms, The Bull at Foolow, Sangams, Colemans Deli, and The Maynard.

Hathersage boasts an iconic outdoor swimming pool from the 1930s. It is heated and has commanding views of Stanage Edge, Hathersage Church, and the surrounding countryside.

It’s also the perfect destination for literature buffs, with North Lees Hall, the muse behind Charlotte Bronte’s ‘Jane Eyre’, in the heart of Hathersage.

Embark on a trek along Stanage Edge, a prominent ridge offering panoramic views over the dark peak moorlands, appearing in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice with British acting icon Kiera Knightley.

Another gem, the Surprise View, is the best spot for looking over Hope Valley and beyond.

Whether you reach it at sunrise or to gaze at the stars, the name itself hints at the incredible views that await.

“In and around the village are also sites associated with the legend of Robin Hood – his lieutenant, Little John is buried in the churchyard of St Michael’s,” notes Visit Peak District and Derbyshire.
