Beautiful walkable European city just a 2-hour flight from UK is top winter spot | Europe | Travel

One European city is the perfect location for an autumn or winter getaway – and it’s just a two-hour flight from the UK.

Vienna, in Austria, is a great location for all types of travellers, whether you’re looking for a relaxing city break or planning to get your steps in and visit all the cultural and historical sites.

And according to Insider Monkey, Vienna is one of the most walkable cities in the world, meaning you may not have to add any public transport fees to the costs of your stay.

Highlights include Schönbrunn Palace, which was once the summer residence of the Hapsburg rulers, the Gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the Hofburg, which was the Hamsburg’s principal imperial palace, and is now home to the Spanish Riding School.

TripAdvisor’s ‘Must-do experiences in Vienna’ also include watching a classical music concert at St Stephen’s, taking a historical walking tour of the city centre, and a half-day wine tour just outside the city itself.

Of Vienna’s history, Austria’s tourist board writes: “Vienna’s history dates back to the first post-Christian century, when the Romans established the military camp Vindobona.

“Today’s cityscape is characterised by the abundance of Baroque buildings created mostly under the rule of Empress Maria Theresia (1740 – 1780) and Franz Joseph (1848 – 1916), who was largely responsible for the monumental architecture in the city’s centre.”

For those visiting the city this November, be sure to try and snap up some ball tickets. November until February is the city’s traditional ball season, with the tourist board claiming “no other country has balls as romantic and festive as Vienna.”

During these winter months, more than 400 balls take place each year. At these you can expect to take part in the courtly customs, which date back to the 18th century.

There are a range of different airlines that fly to Vienna from the UK, so you’ll likely be able to find something whatever your budget.

Austrian airlines fly from a range of British airports, with prices starting at £131 for a round trip. While Ryanfair fly from London Stanstead, Edinburgh, and Manchester, with prices starting at just £14.99 for a one way ticket.
