Bollywood stars have paid tribute after the tragic death of an acting “hero”.

Bollywood icon Dharmendra’s death was confirmed by Indian news agency IANS, citing family. Indian filmmaker Karan Johar also posted a message on social media mourning the actor’s death. He was 89 years old.

The actor – fondly known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema – had been released from Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital earlier this month (November 12), and was thought to be in a stable condition whilst recuperating at home.

Across a 65-year career, he appeared in more than 300 films, holding the record for featuring in the greatest number of successful productions.

Karan Johar paid tribute to Dharmendra with a heartfelt statement, saying: “It’s the end of an era, a massive mega star, the embodiment of a hero in mainstream cinema, incredibly handsome and the most enigmatic screen presence,” reports Birmingham Live.

“He only had immense love and positivity for everyone… His blessings, his hug and his incredible warmth will be missed more than words can describe.

“Today there is a gaping hole in our industry, space that can never be filled by anyone. There will always be the one and only DHARAMJI… We love you kind Sir.”

The statement continued: “We will miss you so much…. The heavens are blessed today…. It will always be my blessing to have worked with you….

“And my heart says with respect, reverence and love…. Abhi Na jao chodke…. Ke dil abhi bhara nahi…..”

The tributes continued to pour in on social media, as actor NTR Jr wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dharmendra ji..

“An era he defined can never be replaced and the warmth he brought to Indian cinema will stay with us forever. My heartfelt condolences and prayers to the entire family.”

Actress Kareena Kapoor Khan also posted a throwback photo of the iconic actor alongside her late grandfather, Raj Kapoor.

Kareena captioned the image, “Forever in power”.
