British tourist drowns after rip tide pulls them out to sea in Bali | World | News

A British tourist has died after being pulled out to sea by a deadly rip current on Bali. The 39-year-old man was swimming at Nyang-Nyang Beach on the island popular with British tourists when he is believed to have been quickly caught in the swell and pulled away by a rip current.

Shocked beachgoers found the tourist’s lifeless body floating near the shore of the Pecatu village at around 7.45am local time on Sunday (March 15). Dramatic footage has revealed two fellow tourists battled to pull the man ashore through the strong waves. After he was recovered from the water, officers carried the Brit to an evacuation point near the beach. Emergency services rushed to the scene but tragically, he was confirmed dead. An ambulance then took him to Prof. Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar for a post-mortem examination.

Nyoman Sidakarya, Head of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, said: “The search and rescue standby officer on duty received information from the Pecatu community officer requesting evacuation assistance regarding the discovery of a body in the middle of the sea.

“The evacuation involved several agencies, including the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, the Water Police, South Kuta Police, Pecatu village authorities, Balawista South Kuta lifeguards, and members of the local community.”

Authorities are now investigating the cause of his death.

Bali is famed worldwide for its surfing and swimming beaches, however hidden rip tides and sudden surging waves can quickly turn the waters dangerous for inexperienced swimmers.

A short time later, NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived and continued CPR; however, the man and woman couldn’t be revived and died at the scene.

According to the force family members of the couple were at the scene.

A spokesperson for the force said: “This is a tragic incident and our heart goes out to the family.”

NSW Police have commended the work of two off duty female nurses and a young male in helping the couple.
