Carlos Baleba breaks silence on Man Utd transfer as new price set | Football | Sport

Carlos Baleba has spoken out regarding claims that speculation linking him with Manchester United has affected his performances this campaign. The Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder was touted for a massive £100million move to Old Trafford during the summer window, following his impressive displays for Fabian Hurzeler’s team in 2024/25. Nevertheless, United ultimately decided against pursuing him and Baleba remained at the Amex Stadium.

Since the transfer window closed, the Cameroon international has featured in 15 matches for the Seagulls. Whilst he has been a near-constant presence in Brighton’s starting XI, his performances haven’t reached the heights of previous seasons. This has led to some, including Brighton fans, questioning if the transfer rumours have had a detrimental effect on his displays over the last few months.

Addressing these concerns, Baleba told Sky Sports on Sunday: “I don’t think it affected me negatively, but I had a lot of pressure on me. When I started this season, I wanted to show the same performances as last season.

“Every day I try to work hard and get back to my level. Did I put too much pressure on myself? Yes, I think so, but I think it’s good.

“It’s good for me, because now I have to get through this slightly stressful period, get back on the horse and continue working hard.”

Despite a season of fluctuating form, Baleba is once again rumoured to be on United’s radar for a January transfer as they aim to bolster their midfield.

The Red Devils were keen to strengthen this area in the summer but failed to do so, leaving Ruben Amorim with the same options.

Brighton, initially reluctant to part ways with Baleba and valuing him at £100m, have reportedly softened their stance since the summer. Earlier this month, reports suggested that they might now entertain offers around £74.3m.

In a promising development for United, it’s believed that Baleba would prefer a move to Old Trafford over Bayern Munich. The German champions are also said to be eyeing the Cameroonian star amidst doubts over Leon Goretzka’s future.

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is another player on United’s wish list, although he’s also being pursued by several Premier League rivals.

Elliot Anderson has also been identified as a potential target for Amorim’s side, but Nottingham Forest are expected to rebuff any attempts to sign the England international in January.

If United do not manage to secure the signatures of one, if not two, midfielders in the coming month, it’s anticipated to affect Kobbie Mainoo’s chances of a January departure.

The youngster is eager to part ways with United for more playing time, with Napoli among those keen on signing him, although the Red Devils are reluctant to sell and would favour a loan deal.

On the pitch, United’s next match sees them hosting Bournemouth on Monday night. A victory over the Cherries at Old Trafford will see the Reds climb to fifth place in the Premier League table.
