Champions League draw confirmed as Man City and Celtic handed nightmare ties | Football | Sport
The draw for the knockout playoff phase of this season’s Champions League has been made, with Manchester City and Celtic learning their path to the round of 16.
Both clubs failed to secure automatic qualification to the knockout stages after missing out on a top-eight finish in the all-new league phase.
Only the teams who finished from ninth to 24th were involved in today’s draw, with the top eight clubs going straight through to the round of 16.
Manchester City will face Real Madrid over two legs for a place in the knockout phase, while Celtic will go up against Bayern Munich.
Another exciting tie will see Paris Saint-Germain take on Brest, with the two French sides having been placed on a collision course. Juventus have been drawn against PSV Eindhoven, while Borussia Dortmund will face Sporting.
Monaco will need to get past Benfica to reach the knockout stages, while AC Milan will play Feyenoord and Atalanta will entertain Club Brugge.
Manchester City will be looking for sweet revenge over Real Madrid, who beat them on their way to securing Champions League glory last season.
They faced each other in the quarter-finals and drew both games, with Real Madrid winning on penalties before lifting the title against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
The winner of the playoff between Manchester City and Real Madrid will face either Bayer Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid in the round of 16, with Celtic or Bayern Munich going up against the other team.
It will be a huge test for the Scottish champions, who have not reached the knockout stages of the Champions League since 2013 and will go into their clash with Bayern Munich as massive underdogs.
Elsewhere, one of Juventus, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord or AC Milan will take on Arsenal in the last 16, while Liverpool will be tasked with facing one of Paris Saint-Germain, Brest, Monaco or Benfica.
Aston Villa, who secured a top-eight finish in midweek, have had their next opponents narrowed down to Atalanta, Borussia Dortmund, Sporting or Club Brugge.
The first legs of the playoff round will take place between February 11 and February 12. The return legs will be staged the following week, between February 18 and February 19. The draw for the round of 16 will be made on February 21.
