Championship star breaks silence after vomiting violently on the pitch in win | Football | Sport

Oli McBurnie has vowed to “cut down on the caffeine gels”, having been spotted throwing up on the pitch during Hull City’s victory over Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon. Hull are in the play-off picture in the Championship, with the Tigers eyeing up a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017.

They picked up a vital three points in pursuit of a spot in the Championship’s top six away to Portsmouth, with a second-half goal from Matt Crooks proving the difference. McBurnie played the full 90 minutes, but his place in the team looked in jeopardy just after the half-time break, as the striker was spotted keeled over and throwing his guts up.

Eagle-eyed fans spotted McBurnie struggling, with one posting a clip of him throwing up, captioned: “Ollie McBurnie started throwing up on the pitch [laughing emoji].”

Others commented, saying: “That clip of McBurnie spewing on pitch is grim knocked my appetite that #hcafc.”

While one said: “Oli McBurnie have a heavy Friday night? [sick emoji].”

McBurnie did take to social media himself to clarify the situation, posting on X: “3 points and up the road boshhhhhh [tiger emoji]. Might need to cut down on the caffeine gels at half time [x2 sick emoji and x3 laughing emoji].”

It’s a result that keeps Hull in fifth, seven points clear of seventh-place Southampton in the hunt for the play-offs. On the victory against Portsmouth, manager Sergej Jakirovic told BBC Radio Humberside: “We didn’t play good, our performance was average.

“We missed a lot in possession, you can play but you don’t have control – (we made) unforced errors, giving the ball away. At half- time we agreed we can play with much more confidence – be more vertical and we increased energy with the substitutions – (we were) not 100 per cent in the first half.

“I was angry – it wasn’t our face, our performance. I don’t care any more about impressions but I would like that we play much better. I felt that we had one chance because we were mostly in our half. We took three points which is most important.”

Hull will resume their Championship campaign on Tuesday night when they face a tricky test against automatic promotion hopefuls, Ipswich Town. Ipswich sit fourth in the table, three points behind second-placed Middlesbrough. However, the Tractor Boys have the added advantage of boasting a game in hand over their promotion rivals.
