At first glance it appears to be just another charming hamlet, yet this idyllic spot nestled in the Irish countryside holds far greater history than many visitors might initially suspect.

Inistioge ranks amongst Ireland’s most stunning villages, frequently praised for its abundant “charm” as it rests peacefully within the Nore Valley. The tranquil setting fosters an atmosphere of serenity, enveloped by expansive countryside and the river in which the village lies upon.

Threading its way through this postcard-worthy village is the River Nore, accompanied by the striking 10-arch stone bridge which forms the centrepiece of Inistioge. Constructed in 1765 following devastating floods that destroyed its predecessor, the structure has endured in position ever since.

Despite its modest size, the village possesses a rich heritage which unfolds through its various historic structures scattered throughout the area.

Among these stands the remains of Woodstock House and Estate, the shell of a Palladian manor house thought to originate from 1745, attributed to architect Francis Bindon.

During an exploration of these atmospheric ruins, one visitor expressed their amazement at the gardens concealed within the estate.

They shared on TripAdvisor: “We had no idea what to expect when we entered the garden and the arboretum, but it turned out to be a real secret garden, hidden in the hills above Inistioge. “

Another visitor added: “Having driven through the beautiful village of Inistioge many times over the years, we finally got around to doing the Woodstock Gardens loop walk this week and were rewarded by a wonderful walk from the village along the river Nore, before heading up to the house and gardens.

“The walk was great, but we were amazed by the scale and grandeur of the gardens, culminating in what must be the nicest tearoom anywhere (at least on a sunny day! ).”

Yet the village itself remains the true highlight of Inistioge, serving as the perfect backdrop for numerous television programmes and films. The picturesque location has appeared in productions including Circle of Friends, Widow’s Peak, and The Secret Scripture, attracting a host of celebrated actors to its charming streets.

Hollywood stars such as Minnie Driver, famed for Good Will Hunting and Tarzan, and the late Natasha Richardson, recognised for Parent Trap and The Handmaid’s Tale, have both worked in the village during filming. They’ve been joined by other notable names including Mia Farrow and Rooney Mara.

The village’s picturesque surroundings have made it an ideal location for period dramas and contemporary films depicting small-town life.

Among these was the recent romantic film Love’s Portrait, released in 2022, which prominently showcased the village’s striking bridge.
