The UK’s cheapest car to insure has been revealed, and it’s not a Toyota, Skoda or Ford. The continuing war in Iran has people in Britain concerned about the spiralling cost of living.

A knock-on effect of the conflict has seen gas, electricity, mortgages and other household necessities either rise or predicted to rise.

So too will the cost of running a petrol or diesel car with the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz sending fuel prices rocketing.

With rising costs in mind, a group of motoring experts have put together a list of the cheapest cars in the UK to insure as money saving expert Martin Lewis issues a warning to people over their car insurance.

The list of cheapest cars to insure in the UK was compiled by automotive experts Carwow, who found that the cheapest car to insure in the UK was the Kia Picanto, also one of the cheapest cars to run in the UK.

Sitting in insurance group one, the competitive city car was praised for being safe and sensible as well as fuel-efficient. They said: “As pretty much the only combustion-powered city car still standing, the Kia Picanto will become a de facto choice for many. Thankfully it also continues to be a very cheap one to insure.

“The Picanto offers remarkable fuel economy (you might crack 60mpg if you’re gentle on the throttle) thanks to low power and its low weight, though longer journeys aren’t the Picanto’s friend.”

Coming in second behind the Picanto was the Volkswagen Polo 1.0 Life. Sitting in insurance group three, the small hatchback was praised for being “surprisingly stylish” and “a pretty posh car”.

However, Carwow said that whilst VW was a posh brand that “you will have to go for the cheapest Polo of them all, the entry-level Life, which uses the most basic engine in the entire Volkswagen lineup”.

In third behind the Polo and Picanto was the Dacia Sandero TCe 100 Expression. Also in insurance group three it was highlighted for its “no-nonsense motoring” and being capable of achieving fuel economy “north of 50mpg if you’re gentle with it”.

Carwow’s tips on the cheapest cars to insure in the UK come as Martin Lewis warned that March was the “second busiest” month of the year for car insurance.

Writing in his weekly Money Saving Expert email, Martin explained one key tip to make sure you’re getting the best deal possible on your car insurance

He said: “March is the second-busiest car insurance month, so many are renewing. But be aware average car cover costs are down 11% on last year.

“So if nowt’s changed and your renewal isn’t cheaper, don’t accept it… put yourself in the driver’s seat and use our Compare+ Car Insurance tool, which guides you through every trick in our book.”
