Cheapest time to run washing machine this summer to slash bills | Personal Finance | Finance
Experts have revealed the cheapest time to run washing machines this summer. A bit of advance planning can help slash bills by making the most of bargain rates throughout the day when prices drop on certain tariffs.
However, the advice applies to time-of-use tariffs, which update pricing based on demand across the country, sometimes every 30 minutes, meaning that prices fall as demand falls, and rise as it soars. Gordon Wallis, energy expert at Your NRG, explained: “Many people are unaware that the time of day they use their washing machine can have a significant impact on their energy bills. For those on time-of-use tariffs, electricity providers often charge less during off-peak hours, such as late at night or early morning.”
He added: “By adjusting your routine and doing your laundry during these cheaper periods, you could see decent savings over the course of a year.”
Liz Hunter, Commercial Director at comparison site Money Expert, explained that demand is at its highest between 7am and 9am when most people are waking up, and after school or work between 3:00pm and 6:00pm.
The expert revealed the best time to use white appliances, such as washing machines, would be “before 7am, or late at night” to beat the hikes.
The original Money Saving Expert, Martin Lewis, reminded customers that the time of day makes no difference at all unless you have the applicable tariffs, because a standard variable or fixed tariff doesn’t consider timings, even with a smart meter.
This is why he warned on his website in January: “Done right, it can save you money. Done wrong, it can cost you more.”
Wallis also reminded Brits that switching to cold washes can cut energy use by up to 90% without sacrificing cleanliness.
While on the tumble dryer, he recommended keeping the filter clean to improve performance, shorten drying times, and save energy.
