Chelsea make final decision on Semenyo transfer in Man Utd twist | Football | Sport

Chelsea have cooled their interest in Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo after making an enquiry about the sought-after winger on Tuesday, ahead of the January transfer window. The 25-year-old Ghanaian international is a hot commodity with the window opening in just over a week.

Despite penning a new contract with the south coast club in the summer, a £65million release clause has attracted the attention of all the Premier League’s top clubs. Clubs interested will not have the entire month to activate the clause, as it expires on January 10, a move designed to give Bournemouth ample time to find a replacement.

If he stays at the Vitality Stadium, the release clause will then be reduced to a lower amount in the summer.

It was revealed on Tuesday morning that Chelsea were contemplating a late push for the winger to boost their attacking options. The Blues did bring in two wingers in the summer, Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho, but they have had a long-standing interest in Semenyo, having considered a move back in 2019 when he was still at Bristol City.

Chelsea will not pursue a move for Semenyo as things stand. They did make an enquiry and hold strong admiration for the player, but it is believed they have confidence in the attackers currently available to Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea are not alone in their interest in Semenyo, with Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United all reportedly courting the player ahead of a potential January transfer. Tottenham, another London rival, is also said to be interested, though they have always been considered long shots for his signature.

It’s understood that the two Manchester clubs have had the most substantial discussions with the player’s representatives. Chelsea’s immediate attention, however, will shift to their upcoming league matches against Aston Villa and Bournemouth.

The latter’s trip to Stamford Bridge on December 30 could mark Semenyo’s final appearance for the south coast club if his release clause is activated shortly afterwards. Currently sitting fourth in the league table after 17 matches, Maresca’s team is level on points with Liverpool, meaning further progress is needed to secure a Champions League spot next season.
