Dismembered body found in suitcase in Paris | World | News

Dismembered body parts have been discovered stuffed in a suitcase under a bridge in Paris, sending shockwaves through France’s capital city just weeks before it hosts the 2024 Summer Olympics.

A man has surrendered to the authorities following the gruesome find along the River Seine.

Firefighters stumbled upon the grisly find this weekend while responding to a call about a rubbish fire near the Austerlitz Bridge, near the bustling Gare du Lyon railway station.

Amidst the charred debris, they uncovered human remains concealed within a suitcase beneath the bridge.

The Paris prosecutor’s office has since confirmed that a man presented himself at a police station on Sunday morning and is now being held for questioning. The 34-year-old individual arrived at the precinct around 8am and was promptly taken into custody, reports The Mirror.

A statement released by the prosecutor’s office said: “He has been remanded into custody for murder.”

The statement also noted: “Numerous investigations are underway and the person concerned has not yet been interviewed.”

The suspect confessed to the crime upon his surrender, claiming the victim was a disabled individual he had previously cared for until a conflict arose between them, reports  French broadcaster Europe1. The dismembered body was located at the base of the bridge late Saturday night.

The chilling discovery has been made near the heart of Paris, as investigators stumbled upon a dismembered body just a stone’s throw away from the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral. A source privy to the case details told Le Parisien that the remains of “an adult male” were found lacking “upper and lower limbs”.

The source  revealed: “The body was complete but in several pieces.”

In a similarly gruesome incident last year, parts of a woman’s dismembered body were uncovered in Buttes-Chaumont Park, situated in Paris’s northeast. The victim, a 46-year-old mother of three, had been reported missing by her spouse before he was charged with her murder.

The news comes as Paris prepares to welcome an influx of visitors for the upcoming Olympic Games on July 26.
