Djokovic ‘closing in on £17.5m deal’ after uprooting family | Tennis | Sport

Novak Djokovic is reportedly closing in on a big-money deal to buy a tennis and racket club in Greece. The 24-time Grand Slam winner continues to put down roots in the country after moving his family there earlier this year.

Back in September, the Djokovic family, including his wife Jelena and two children, Stefan and Tara, moved from Belgrade to a town just outside of the Greek capital, Athens. The family reportedly received a golden visa after purchasing their property worth more than €800,000 (around £700,000).

The 38-year-old is now reportedly closing in on a deal for his new training facilities. According to tennis24gr, he is making a €20 million (£17.5m) investment in the Elliniko Tennis and Racket Sports Club.

The club includes 20 tennis courts alongside padel and pickleball courts, with the two sports growing in popularity.

As well as using the club as his own training base, Djokovic is also said to be in talks with the Greek Tennis Federation over using the facility to help the country’s best tennis players as well as develop rising stars. He is reported to have already held talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Greek Tennis Federation President Thodoris Glavas to discuss the plans.

Speaking about the decision to move his family from his native Serbia to Greece, Djokovic told SDNA: “We have two young children and we are trying to adapt and find the best environment for them as well.

“Because that is the priority, how the children will grow up in the most beneficial environment for them for their psychological, physical and emotional health. To be in an environment where we feel like we have more time as a family, privately.”

Not long after making the move, Djokovic took part in the Hellenic Championship. He beat Italian Lorenzo Musetti in three sets in the final to win the tournament.

Just a few days later, he pulled out of the ATP finals in Italy with an ongoing shoulder injury. He was replaced in the tournament by Musetti.
