Donald Trump breaks silence on ‘very good’ phone call with Vladimir Pu | World | News

Donald Trump has issued a statement on his “very good” phone call with Vladimir Putin. The pair spoke for an hour and a half and agreed terms for a “limited” ceasefire.

Trump said Russia would never have invaded Ukraine if he had been the US president in 2022. He added that the ceasefire process is “now in full force and effect” and said he will “get the job done”.

Posting on Truth Social, he said: “My phone conversation today with President Putin of Russia was a very good and productive one. We agreed to an immediate Ceasefire on all Energy and Infrastructure, with an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a Complete Ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very horrible War between Russia and Ukraine. This War would have never started if I were President! Many elements of a Contract for Peace were discussed, including the fact that thousands of soldiers are being killed, and both President Putin and President Zelenskyy would like to see it end. That process is now in full force and effect, and we will, hopefully, for the sake of Humanity, get the job done!!”

Trump and Putin agreed to stop strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure for 30 days after the phone call. They also confirmed that 175 prisoners of war would be swapped between Moscow and Kyiv, as well as the handing over of 23 wounded Ukrainian soldiers.
