Donald Trump explodes at Russia threatening ‘huge tariffs’ after Putin’s savage attack | World | News
Donald Trump has said he is considering new sanctions and tariffs on Russia following several devastating attacks on Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s forces. Trump wrote: “Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large-scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED. To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!”
The comments came after Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone bombardment on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight, officials reported Friday. Just hours earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that discussions with the US to end the three-year conflict are set for next week. Ukraine suffered a “massive missile and drone” onslaught, according to Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko’s Facebook post. Authorities have reported at least 10 people, including a child, were injured in the attacks.
“Russia is trying to hurt ordinary Ukrainians by striking energy and gas production facilities, without abandoning its goal of leaving us without light and heat, and causing the greatest harm to ordinary citizens,” Halushchenko stated on social media.
The Russian strategy of targeting Ukraine’s power grid has been persistent throughout the war, leading to a significant reduction in electricity generation capacity and disruptions to essential heating and water services.
Ukrainian officials have condemned Russia for effectively “weaponising winter” as a tactic to undermine the morale of civilians.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared on Friday that energy supply is a legitimate target in the conflict, stating it’s “linked with Ukraine’s military-industrial complex and weapons production.”
In his latest address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his plans to visit Saudi Arabia on Monday for a meeting with the crown prince. His team will continue to engage in discussions with US officials.
Zelensky also praised the European Union’s initiative to enhance the continent’s defences and expressed optimism that some increased expenditure might benefit Ukraine’s defence sector.
