Donald Trump’s firm plans to build Australia’s ‘tallest building’ | World | News
The Trump Organization has agreed a deal to build what developers say will be Australia‘s tallest building. Under the plans, a “six-star” resort hotel will rise 91 storeys above the country’s popular Gold Coast seaside hotspot south of Brisbane.
The project is worth over £785million (US$1.06billion) and includes 285 hotel rooms, luxury apartments, shops, a pool and beach club, according to the developer Altus Property Group. It said: “Australia’s tallest building will be a Trump Tower, right in the middle of Surfers Paradise – it’s great for Queensland tourism, and fantastic for Australia.” Apartments on the block are expected to start at £2.6m (AS$5m).
Altus Property Group added: “It won’t have a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton brand above the front door, but it will say ‘Trump’. And that means it is a no-expense-spared, highest-possible-quality building – the best in the world.”
Trump Hotels’ website said the Gold Coast skyscraper is set to become Australia’s tallest tower.
It added: “[T]his landmark address redefines beachfront sophistication with world-class amenities, iconic design and uninterrupted Gold Coast views.”
David Young, Chief Executive of Altus Property Group, is reported by Reuters as saying he had been pursuing the project for almost two decades.
Mr Young said he had cold-called Mr Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, in 2007 to pitch the idea. He said the deal was secured with the Trump Organization at the US President’s Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida on February 14.

The CEO told the news agency the tower would be Australian-owned and built according to the Trump Organization’s design specifications.
While touted to become Australia’s tallest building by its backers, a separate project for a 101-storey tall scheme is also expected to be built on the same stretch of coastline, according to the BBC.
The twin tower project would be 50 metres taller than the Trump Organization scheme.
A Trump hotel in Australia’s Gold Coast would add to the organisation’s hotel portfolio, which includes Trump International and Trump Turnberry in Scotland.
There are also plans for hotels in Oman, Dubai, Vietnam, the Maldives and Saudi Arabia, according to Trump Hotels’ website.
