Emma Raducanu ‘so happy’ for Draper and Norris as Brit unsurprised | Tennis | Sport
Emma Raducanu insisted that she is “so happy” that fellow Brits Jack Draper and Lando Norris both enjoyed success last weekend, with Draper taking the Indian Wells title and Norris claiming the first Formula One race win of the 2025 season. Raducanu herself is currently preparing for the Miami Open as she attempts to turn around what has been a difficult start to the season.
The 22-year-old, who faces world No. 188 Sayaka Ishii in the first round in Miami, was asked about Draper and Norris, and she was over the moon to discuss her fellow Brits. “Yeah of course, I was so happy for him,” Raducanu told Sky Sports when asked about Draper’s Indian Wells victory. “He is someone I have known since we were so small and we were literally kids.
“We grew up together so I know how much work he has put in and how much he deserves it. I am just really happy and rooting for him.”
On a big Sunday for British sport, Raducanu reflected on Norris’ Australian Grand Prix win, having survived very difficult conditions to pip Max Verstappen to the chequered line, though admitted she wasn’t able to catch the race live.
“Honestly I was training all day so I didn’t watch,” she candidly shared. “Unfortunately I have to be honest there. I watched the highlights though and I am [happy for Norris], I actually said before Indian Wells that I wanted him to win, so I am happy that Lando won.”
Speaking before her defeat to Moyuka Uchijima in California, Raducanu did tip Verstappen to win the F1 title over Norris, but she will still be rooting for the McLaren man.
British No. 1 Katie Boulter shared Raducanu’s sentiments and was not shocked when Draper beat Holger Rune to claim his first ATP Masters title.
“[Draper] broke inside the top 10 for the first time as well,” Boulter added on the new No. 7. “A very special moment for him. He has actually been working with my fitness trainer so we have been hearing a lot about how he has been getting on.
“Of course we watched [the final] but what an achievement, I am very happy for him, [he is] very hard working and it is nice to see the results come from the hard work he has put in.
“I hate to say this out loud but I actually called it. Maybe not from the start of the tournament but I did call it with my team, I felt like he has been building for a while now and the last few tournaments he has been playing so well.
“It was just a matter of time before his body allowed him to back up these weeks and it feels like he has really done that. I think very highly of him, so I am not surprised.”
