Emma Raducanu splits with coach as statement released | Tennis | Sport
Emma Raducanu has parted ways with coach Francisco Roig following her Australian Open exit. The Brit spent six months with the former partner of Rafael Nadal and is now in search of her ninth permanent coach
The 23-year-old expressed her thanks to the Spaniard, who has also worked with Italian star Matteo Berrettini. Raducanu explained that Roig had served as more than a coach during their time together and that she will cherish the memories they made.
“Francis, Thank you for our time together” she said. “You have been more than a coach to me and I will cherish the many good times we spent together on and off the court.
“While we have come to the conclusion together that we ought not to move forward, please know that I am very grateful for all you have taught me and fond of our time shared.”
Raducanu appeared to question her coach’s methods following her straight-sets defeat to world No. 55 Anastasia Potapova in Melbourne. She said: “I want to be playing a different way, I need to work on playing in a way more similar to how I was playing when I was younger.”
It has been suggested Roig’s tentative style has proven to be at odds with the more aggressive approach Raducanu wanted to employ. Roig’s preference is for a deep court position in tandem with top-spin and cross-court rallies, while Raducanu is noted for her smooth movement.
“I just want to hit the ball to the corners and hard,” Raducanu explained. “I feel like I’m doing all this variety, and it’s not doing what I want it to do. I need to work on playing in a way more similar to how I was playing when I was younger.
“I always just changed direction, took the ball early, and went for it. I think I do have the ability to do many things on the court, but I feel like [even] as I’m learning all those skills, I need to stick to my guns a bit as well.”
Raducanu’s list of coaches has grown rapidly during her career. Nigel Sears was her coach at her first Wimbledon before she earned US Open success with Andrew Richardson. She has worked alongside Torben Beltz, Dmitry Tursunov, Sebastian Sachs, Nick Cavaday, Vlademir Platenik, Mark Petchey and Roig since then.
Raducanu is due to next play the WTA 250 event in Cluj, Romania starting on February 1.
