This pretty part of Slovenia is an underrated part of the country but it’s one you should consider adding to your travel list. Maribor in Slovenia which is located an hour and a half away from the readily accessible capital of Ljubljana.
Many tourists visiting Slovenia often head to Lake Bled instead of Maribor but the city has much to offer and won’t have as many visitors crowding its streets. Despite the popularity of Bled, it’s actually Maribor is the country’s second-largest city. And the whole place has the charm and beauty of a piece of living Renaissance art, says Adventurous Miriam.
One place to visit in the city is the Old Vine House which is home to one of the world’s oldest vines.
The vine dates back over 400 years and has even won a Guinness World Record by being the oldest noble vine in the world still bearing grapes.
It’s a fascinating and pretty place to visit, one visitor on Tripadvisor said: “We had a tour of the place and then a wine tasting. Both were excellent.
“Really knowledgeable and friendly staff. The history of wine in the region of Maribor is very interesting and the Old Vine House is definitely worth a visit.”
Maribor is a mountain city with a deep winemaking heritage, and the Drava River flows through it creating a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the views.
Another must-see place is Piramida (Pyramid Hill) which has stunning views of the city.
A visitor said: “On top of the hill is a small chapel with a bell for wishes, beside on the right side is the archaeological finding of the primary castle.”
The reviewer said you’ll get a breathtaking view of the city and to the side of the hill you’ll be able to see over the old town.
If you visit the city, you should visit Maribor park which is known for its incredible greenery.
The lower part of Maribor’s main park is inserted into the fabric of the city, where there are tree-fringed avenues, sculptures, lawns and a space for concerts on summer weekends.
According to the Crazy Tourist, you’ll also have the opportunity to visit its aquarium which is home to more than 120 freshwater and saltwater species, as well as a terrarium inhabited by venomous and other reptiles.
