‘Extreme risk’ Spain warning as people told to ‘avoid’ | Travel News | Travel

Travellers who are headed to parts of Spain, or who are already there, have been issued an “extreme risk” weather warning.

The Spanish Directorate-General for Civil Protection and Emergencies issued an alert on X, formerly Twitter, relating to Barcelona and Girona. The post, translated from Spanish, explains there is an “extreme risk situation”.

It adds that there will be wind gusts of up to 140 km/hour tomorrow, Sunday, between 5am and 5pm.

The weather alert is in place for Girona Pyrenees and Barcelona Pre-Pyrenees, with people urged to take “maximum caution” and follow these recommendations:

“In the mountains – avoid going up to high and wind-exposed places. Keep in mind that the wind can favour snow accumulation and this increases the risk of avalanches.

“In the city – avoid passing under cornices, trees, scaffolding, cranes, or walls that could come loose. At home – remove any object that could fall or cause an accident [and keep] doors and windows closed.

“If you are driving – moderate your speed and take extreme precautions if driving a larger vehicle or with a trailer, as you have a higher risk of overturning. Be careful with overtaking and maintain a safe distance.”

The alert concluded by asking people to “stay informed through official channels”.
