A child has been arrested following a school shooting in Finland which left multiple minors injured, police said.

Several children have been injured following the horrific attack in the city of Vantaa, 10 miles north of Helsinki. Armed police stormed the school grounds shortly after 9am local time (7am GMT), following reports a gunman had opened fire.

The Viertola school is currently on lockdown with members of the public urged to avoid the area.

Pictures show armed officers and several police vehicles surrounded the school gates.

Finnish police said in a statement: “Police are at the scene investigating the incident. Bystanders are asked to stay away from the area and indoors. The door should not be opened to strangers.”
