Former president killed as ‘missile strike hits home’ | World | News

A former Iranian president has reportedly been killed in the latest round of US and Israeli strikes. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad died after a missile struck his home, it has been claimed.

Mr Ahmadinejad, 69, served as president of Iran from 2005 to 2013. Iranian news agencies have confirmed his death which has also been reported by media in Israel. This had initially been reported as confirmed by the semi-official Iranian ILNA news agency, before seemingly rowing back.

It later reported that an anonymous source denied Mr Ahmadinejad’s death “without providing further information”, according to The Guardian.

The news agency previously claimed Mr Ahmadinejad had been killed at his home in an airstrike in eastern Tehran along with his bodyguard.

Known for his hardline rhetoric, Mr Ahmadinejad took a confrontational stance toward the West and drew international scrutiny over Iran’s nuclear programme.

His presidency was also marked by the disputed 2009 election results and the mass protests that followed across Iran, as reported in The Mirror.

Iran’s senior leadership have been targeted during the US-Israeli military action which is now into its second day after starting on Saturday morning.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed, as well as several other key officials.

This includes the top commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Major General Mohammad Pakpour, defence minister General Aziz Nasirzadeh and army chief of staff General Abdol Rahim Mousavi.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said a new leadership council “has begun its work” after the death of the Supreme Leader.

Tehran’s parliamentary speaker has vowed revenge for the killing, saying: “You have crossed our red line and must pay the price.”

Iranian forces are continuing to launch retaliatory attacks on targets across the Middle East.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has urged British nationals in the city of Duqm, Oman, to “immediately shelter in place”.

Authorities in Tehran say more than 200 people have been killed since the start of the US-Israeli airstrikes.

Donald Trump has vowed to continue to “heavy and pinpoint” bombing for the next week or “as long as necessary”.

The US Central Command has said three American service members have been killed as part of the operation on Iran.
