Gareth Southgate makes decision on England taking Jadon Sancho to Euro 2024 | Football | Sport

The 24-year-old has been in sensational form, helping Dortmund to reach the Champions League final with his impressive performances out wide. However, it seems he will be overlooked by Southgate when it comes to selecting the England squad to travel to Germany this summer.

The England boss is not planning to pick Sancho in spite of his resurgence at Dortmund over the last few months, according to the Daily Star. It is said that Southgate is not prepared to risk disrupting his long-term planning by naming Sancho in the squad, with England already stacked in the wide positions.

Sancho has not played for England since missing a penalty in the Euro 2020 final against Italy. He has won 23 international caps, scoring three goals along the way, but will reportedly be forced to watch from home when England go in search of continental glory this summer.

England have plenty of wide options to choose from, with Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer almost certain to be on the plane. The likes of Jarrod Bowen, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon will also be hoping to earn a place in the squad at Sancho’s expense.

The Dortmund winger appears to be at a crossroads ahead of next season, with his United future in the balance as long as Erik ten Hag remains in charge. Sancho landed himself in hot water by accusing his manager of lying over the reasons for his absence from United’s squad against Arsenal earlier this season.

Ten Hag explained that Sancho was fully fit to play against the Gunners but was omitted due to his displays in training, a claim that was refuted by the player himself with a bold statement on social media. Sancho then refused to apologise despite being urged to do so before he was sent on loan to Dortmund in January.

United legend Rio Ferdinand has already insisted there will be no way back for Sancho unless Ten Hag is sacked, with Southgate reportedly among the leading candidates to replace the Dutchman next season.

Speaking on TNT Sports after Dortmund beat Paris Saint-Germain to reach the Champions League final, Ferdinand said: “I think the only way he goes back to Manchester United is if Erik ten Hag is not there. I think from a disciplinary standpoint they can’t really undermine the manager.

“Without an apology, the way that the manager’s asked for it, unless they change it, or add a little bit of nuance to it, I don’t think they will undermine the manager in that way. I think the manager has to be gone and out of the building for Jadon Sancho to come back to Manchester United.”
