Ghislaine Maxwell makes freedom bid – hours before Epstein files drop | World | News

Ghislaine Maxwell has asked a court to throw out her sex trafficking conviction – hours before a new set of Jeffrey Epstein files are due to be released. She claimed that “substantial new evidence” from civil cases, investigative reports, and other documents shows that she did not have a fair trial, which resulted in her 20-year sentence.

The court filing in New York is the last of multiple appeals to reduce her sentence after being convicted in 2021. Maxwell has exhausted all of her direct appeals, but filed a habeas petition – a legal request asking a court to review the legality of her detention, according to ABC News. She claims on nine separate grounds, including juror misconduct and government suppression of evidence, that the integrity of her trial was undermined.

Maxwell wrote: “This newly available evidence – derived from litigation against the Federal Bureau of Investigation, various financial institutions, and the Estate of Jeffrey Epstein, as well as from sworn depositions, released records, and other verified sources – shows that exculpatory information was withheld, false testimony presented, and material facts misrepresented to the jury and the Court.”

The 50-page filing continues: “In the light of the full evidentiary record, no reasonable juror would have convicted her.

“Accordingly, she seeks vacatur of her conviction, an evidentiary hearing, and such other relief as this Court deems appropriate and justice requires.”

This comes just hours before more of the Epstein files are released after Congress passed a law last month requiring the Justice Department to release all of the documents it has on the sex offender.

The government must now release “searchable and downloadable” copies of “all unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials” related to Epstein and Maxwell.

However, it still remains unclear exactly what will be made public on Friday and how much of it will be new.
