Halifax clarifies deposit rules after customer told ‘we don’t do that’ | Personal Finance | Finance
Halifax has clarified its cash deposit rules after a question from a confused customer.
The person got in touch over social media with this query: “Please can you explain? Have tried to pay in Norwegian Krone at local branch.
“They came from Halifax end of 2024. Branch can’t take them because ‘Halifax don’t do Krone any more’, yet I can still order them through you online.”
The Halifax website states that customer can order their travel money online or via the app, with “a wide range of currencies” available, including euros and US dollars.
Halifax apologised for the issue and asked if the customer was trying to deposit notes or coins, with the customer replying to say they were trying to pay in notes.
The customer also said: “They’re just the ones I didn’t use. My bank statement shows they were issued by Halifax.”
They further asked if Halifax could reply to confirm that the branch should have accepted the Krone, so they could take this as evidence to compel branch staff to sort the issue.
They even commended the bank’s service saying they liked the way they could order their foreign currency with the bank.
Halifax provided this response: “As far as we’re aware, any branch should be able to accept the currency.”
Guidance on the group’s website explains: “You can take leftover travel money to one of our branches with a counter service.
“We’ll buy currency back from you based on the exchange rate on that day. This rate may have changed since you bought your travel money. If the amount is too low, we won’t be able to buy it back.”
However, the advice also includes this warning: “We may not be able to buy back some currencies. We may stop buying back certain foreign currency bank notes at any time and without notice.”
When ordering foreign cash with Halifax, you can get free next working day delivery to your home or to a branch, if you order by 3pm.
You can order from as low as £200 up to the maximum of £3,000. But you can make several orders a day, up to the value of £7,500 a day.
This will be paid out in whatever denominations are available so you could receive any combination of notes.
