High street giant closes two stores this weekend | UK | News
Poundland closed two more stores yesterday, shutting its branches in Oldham, Manchester and Ballymena in County Antrim. The closures come amid a major shake-up of the business following its sale earlier this year. Poundland was sold by Pepco to investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1, triggering a widespread restructuring programme across its UK estate.
Since the sale, the chain has been working to slim down its store network, with more than 100 branches expected to close once the current round of shutdowns is complete. Stores affected by the closures have introduced major clearance events, with discounts of up to 40% to clear remaining stock.
Once the restructuring is complete, Poundland expects its UK network to shrink from roughly 800 stores to between 650 and 700, marking a significant downsizing of the high street presence.
Darren MacDonald, Poundland’s UK country manager, said: “We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store, but before we close our doors for a final time, we’re determined to say goodbye by offering even more amazing value to customers.
“The special reductions, on top of the value we provide in every store, will help us leave locations we’re leaving with pride.
“And when we close our doors, we look forward to welcoming customers to one of the hundreds of Poundland stores we’ll continue to operate right across the UK.”
Poundland has confirmed that another 12 stores are set to shut before the end of the year, with further closures planned in early 2026. Locations earmarked for closure before the end of 2025 include sites in Brighton, Weston-super-Mare, Farnham and Portadown, among others.
