I boarded Disney’s new cruise ship – one thing was instantly clear | Cruise | Travel

Within a few hours of stepping onboard the Disney Destiny, I’d already witnessed Marvel villain Loki attempting to seize control of the ship, indulged in copious amounts of ice cream whilst gazing out at sea, and discovered my favourite cocktail spot in the ship’s Cruella DeVil themed bar.

I was fortunate enough to be one of the first guests on Disney Cruise Line’s seventh ship before its Florida departures this month, and it quickly became apparent that it offers an abundance of entertainment for its passengers.

One of the most underappreciated benefits of a Disney cruise is the character meet and greets. There are numerous opportunities throughout the day, and the Disney Navigator App provides information on when and where your beloved characters will appear.

During a two-day sailing, I had the pleasure of meeting Cruella DeVil, Maleficent, Belle, Mickey, Captain Hook and Smee, and even shared a dance with Mickey, Donald and Goofy at one of the family-friendly onboard dance parties.

I later learned from fellow passengers about a secret parlour on board where you can encounter Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog; however, be aware, only a select few guests gain entry, and they’re all sworn to secrecy about what lies within!

This is the kind of character interaction that every Disney enthusiast dreams of – but in the parks, it can sometimes be challenging to squeeze them in amongst trying to experience all the rides, so here it’s a much more laid-back way to create those magical moments.

The ship offers more than just character interactions. The top deck features multiple pools, including one adjacent to a large screen for Disney film viewings, while the adults-only areas offer plenty of loungers and stunning ocean views for those seeking tranquillity.

Don’t miss out on a trip to the spa if you’re after some peace and quiet!

Throughout the day, there are numerous entertaining events such as Disney and Marvel themed quizzes, live music, and amusing activities like the ‘Diaper Dash’, where parents race their babies in an adorable and chaotic spectacle.

I also dared to take a ride on the AquaMouse water slide, where you’re propelled around the tubes above the ship in a dinghy. Be warned; you will get thoroughly soaked, but then again, who wants to go on a water slide and stay dry?

In the evening, you can enjoy cocktails at DeVil’s or for the brave, visit the Haunted Parlour where paintings come alive, ghostly apparitions appear, and the cocktails are so beautiful you’ll want to photograph them before drinking. At DeVils, a cosy lounge inspired by Cruella with live piano music, you’ll find a creative drinks menu featuring the Fearless Sir Galahad, a smokey mocktail resembling an Old Fashioned, and the Perfectly Wretched served alongside ‘edible’ makeup treats.

For us Brits, a visit to the Cask and Cannon, a pirates-themed pub, is essential – and yes, they do serve a decent pint…

Theatre enthusiasts will be thrilled by the brand new Hercules show, exclusive to Destiny. The cast were exceptional, creating a lively atmosphere with some truly breathtaking special effects.

The theatre’s ornate design makes you forget you’re on a cruise ship and not in London’s West End.

There’s also an impressive rendition of Frozen that does justice to the film, complete with a talented cast, special effects and plenty of fun surprises for the audience (no spoilers here).

I was taken aback by the variety of evening entertainment, from the pirates’ night featuring a full show and live music, to the unique fireworks at sea! (Disney Cruise Line is currently the only cruise line to offer this). Even the departure was marked with a fun Sail Away party where Mickey and friends put on a delightful little dance show.

All these activities are sure to work up an appetite, but fear not; there’s plenty of food to indulge in. Marceline Market is the main buffet – don’t miss the Mickey waffles at breakfast – while Mickey’s Festival of Foods offers a range of dishes from tacos to barbecues.

For evening dining, the beauty of Disney cruises is the ‘rotational dining’ system, ensuring you a seat at the main restaurants without the need to scramble for a reservation. The Disney Destiny is the first vessel to feature the Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King restaurant, where diners can enjoy live renditions of the film’s legendary songs whilst indulging in their meal.

Meanwhile, the World of Marvel provides entertaining interactions, including a quiz to test your Marvel trivia.

If you’re after an adults-only dining experience (since these cruises aren’t solely for families), then the all-inclusive brunch at Palo Steakhouse is a must-try. I was taken aback when they said I could order a bit of everything – and so I did.

I practically had to roll out of the restaurant, but it was absolutely worth it. Don’t anticipate small servings!

It’s important to note that while most food is included in your Disney cruise fare, there is an additional charge for Palo Steakhouse.

For those with a penchant for sweets, the ship is brimming with ice cream options. By the time I disembarked, I was convinced I was 80% sugar. (A visit to Edna A La Mode Sweets to create your own extravagant treats is highly recommended).

When the inevitable sugar crash hits, the Destiny’s staterooms are fully equipped for relaxation. A large bed? Sorted. Themed with heroes and villains? Absolutely. Bathrooms, amenities, and ample storage? All ticked off.

My stateroom boasted a balcony, which was surprisingly spacious – an ideal spot to soak up those sea views, particularly as we sailed towards Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay!
