‘I live in Greece and there are some Greek islands I’d avoid like the plague’ | Travel News | Travel

Greece is one of Europe’s leading summer destinations and many tourists flock to the country’s islands.

The country has 6,000 islands but only 227 are inhabited and each island tends to have its own vibe.

However, a Greek resident has warned tourists that there are some islands they’d “avoid like the plague” as a visitor.

Reddit user ‘posh_raccoon’ opined: “I was born and raised in Greece. Avoid Mykonos, Santorini and other touristy places.

“Yes, you want to take pictures of the beautiful sunset in Santorini and look at those picturesque houses on the hill – but do you really want to spend a lot of money on that?

“And, I mean a lot of money. We Greeks avoid those places for their insane prices, generally referring to them as tourist traps.

“There’s so many different islands in Greece you can visit. I suggest avoiding these two like the plague.

“These places are very, very expensive in their prices for basic commodities and best suited for a three day stay max in my opinion.”

Mykonos and Santorini are two of Greece’s most expensive island destinations as they are very popular with tourists.

The islands are generally very crowded in the summer season as cruise passengers also arrive during the day.

While the Reddit user recommended travelling to Athens to see the sights, they said people shouldn’t spend their whole holiday there.
