I spent day in UK seaside town branded the worst and I’m furious | UK | News

As a nation, we love to explore different seaside destinations, whether that be for a quick dip during the summer months or a brisk walk along the coast later in the year to dust off the cobwebs. UK consumer champion Which? has released their findings following a survey undertaken by more than 3,800 people about their experiences of UK seaside destinations in the past year. But with New Brighton being ranked among the worst of them all, an editor from The ECHO decided enough was enough and went to see for themselves.

With an overall score of 52%, the organisation based the list on a range of criteria including the quality of the beaches, views, food and drink, accommodation, tourist attractions and lastly, value for money.

Emilia Bona, content editor at The ECHO travelled to the seaside destination located in Merseyside to allow for a fair review following its ranking.

The journalist said she had visited the spot on a number of occasions and simply did not agree with the outcome of the survey.

Visiting the destination on a bright summers day, and admiring the view, they said: “The tide was in when I visited the town, and the views were dramatic, industrial and exactly the sort of seaside vista I enjoy. New Brighton’s outlook might not be to everyone’s tastes, but I think the scenery is provided with a real character thanks to the presence of the ship building yards and cargo ships that form part of the view, in addition to the lighthouse and crashing waves.”

Emilia also praised the local fish bar and cafés, stating: “I’ve seen my fair share of faded, struggling and depressing seaside towns – New Brighton is not one of them. Every shop, café and restaurant I popped into was buzzing with people and had a warm familiarity once you stepped inside.”

Bona also noted the amount of independent shops, street art, local pubs and activities on offer. Her final consensus on the seaside destination was one of fury that it had been ranked so unfairly.

Emilia said: “Honestly, my visit to New Brighton this week left me furious that it could ever be scored so poorly – especially in the categories of scenery, food and drink and shopping options. The views are fantastic, it’s a classic coastal town with all the elements you could ever want from a traditional British seaside destination.”

Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel said: “From beautiful coastlines to peaceful walks and charming traditional bucket and spade resorts, the UK seaside offers something for everyone – whatever the weather.

“While you may have your own favourite destination, as well as the top spots in Devon and Wales, our survey shows there are still plenty of beautiful hidden gems across the UK to explore.

“Some seaside resorts offer better value for money than others, so it is worth looking at surrounding areas of popular spots if you are looking for a cheaper overnight stay.”
