‘I visited the world’s narrowest city – 100,000 people face one constant threat’ | World | News

A travel blogger who recently visited the world’s “narrowest city” has revealed that its 450,000 residents are sitting on the “edge of disaster”.

Drew Binsky shares his globe-trotting adventures on his YouTube channel, which currently boasts more than 4.62m subscribers and more than 1,000 videos.

In a recent video, titled ‘Entering The World’s Narrowest City’, Drew travelled to Yanjin, China, a city situated in Yunnan Province that features a single strip of high rise buildings.

The buildings are nestled between two mountains and line a river, with the city’s apartments and buildings clinging onto the side of cliffs. The strip gets so narrow at some points it stretches just 30 metres across. But, according to Drew, its residents face a “constant threat”.

Drew said: “The main road of Yanjin follows the river’s path, winding through the city with barely enough space for two lanes.”

He continued: “But somehow, 100,000 people live here and they face the constant threat of floods and earthquakes as their homes are sitting on the edge of disaster.

“I came to Yanjin to document how people are living in this crazy environment despite the constant threat of catastrophe.”

The city, which reportedly has a population of 450,000 people, is just 30 metres wide at its narrowest and only 300 metres at its widest, with most parts falling on the riverbank, yet it doesn’t have many bridges.

The buildings have been positioned on pillars as the land is unstable and because of the rising water levels that occur during heavy flooding.

YouTuber @MegaProjects-su9sp previously posted a video about the city, saying: “Every house is closely connected with almost no vacant space.”

They continued: “Moreover, you don’t have to worry about getting lost because the entire place has only one main road. It is truly a single-road city. The unique geographical environment gives Yanjin a distinctive charm, filling people with curiosity and a desire to explore.”

In 2009, Voice of America reported that many houses in Yanjin had been built near hillsides, meaning they were susceptible to earthquakes, according to experts.

In 2006, a 5.1 earthquake hit Yanjin County in Zhaotong City, with 6,000 homes reportedly collapsing. The disaster led to 22 people being killed and more than 100 injured, according to China Daily.

The majority of the houses in Yanjin had been constructed on land that was at risk from earthquakes.
