I went to Disney’s private island in the Bahamas – there was so much | Cruise | Travel

There are countless breathtaking destinations worldwide, but only a select few qualify as ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences; the Bahamas, with its stunning beaches, certainly falls into that category.

As a Disney enthusiast, the opportunity to not only visit the Bahamas but also explore Disney’s private island was quite literally a dream come true. (Just ask my friends and family how often I’ve boasted about my recent trip to the Bahamas – they’ll confirm I’ve been rather unbearable).

Our journey included a stop at Disney’s Castaway Cay as part of a voyage on Disney Cruise Line’s new heroes and villains themed ship, the Disney Destiny. From the moment we docked, I realised I had underestimated the adventure that lay ahead.

To be honest, I’d anticipated a large expanse of beautiful beach, a handful of loungers, and a smattering of fun activities and Disney magic for families. I hadn’t expected the vast array of activities available or the sheer amount of exploration opportunities.

For starters, it’s an entire island waiting to be discovered. There are numerous beaches (both family-friendly and adults-only), gorgeous cabanas, cycling and hiking trails, a waterpark featuring a slide that plunges you directly into the ocean, a shop, and plenty of spots to grab a bite to eat or a drink.

It’s a 15-20 minute walk to the main areas once you disembark the ship, but there’s also a tram that stops at various points on the island if you’d rather not walk.

Disney characters are scattered throughout the island; Daisy Duck and Chip and Dale were all there to greet passengers as we disembarked, and I even spotted Pluto causing some mischief and commandeering a golf cart. There are plenty of photo opportunities too, with charming signs, fun backdrops and ample space so no one has to jostle for position!

Then there are those stunning beaches that I thought I’d only ever see on social media. Indeed, the sands are as soft as they appear, and those crystal-clear waters are not just a Photoshop creation.

There’s a dedicated reef where you can go snorkelling (and there are some Disney statues hidden underwater to discover), but I didn’t even have to get into the water to spot wildlife, as a school of fish swam by while I strolled along the lagoon’s edge, followed by a stingray a few minutes later.

There are plenty of sunloungers along the beach but if you want to do something a bit special, you can hire a cabana for the day which includes a covered seating area, a mini fridge stocked with water and soft drinks, and a button you can press to call servers to take your food and drink orders.

The only drawback?

Our visit was limited to a day trip. I felt like I could have easily stayed on the island, but unfortunately, the crew are quite proficient at ensuring that passengers return to the ship.

(It appears that some Disney cruises offer itineraries with two stops at Castaway Cay, which is an enticing prospect).

However, knowing that you’re returning to a Disney cruise ship filled with character interactions, shows and themed dining does soften the blow somewhat.
